Markham excepts the invitation to see his "Adam and Eve" marbles. Tells him that he is writing a volume on the great Nazarene, called "The Forgotten Purpose of Jesus."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
